Huge news for Prime Timers
And then we're getting AHEAD of perimenopause... I sit down with author and TV legend Shelly Horton to talk about all the ways you can prevent, improve and live WELL with perimenopause.
Can I interrupt this newsletter for a moment? Because something big just happened. (Info on the podcast is below I promise!)
It’s official. Prime Time is the #1 bestselling Australian self help title this week.
We’re in the top five non-fiction books overall (alongside Australia’s favourite recipe books by Nagi and Let Them by Mel Robbins - what a thrill). And we’re proudly in the top 20 bestselling books overall in the entire country. This is all according to this week’s official BOOKSCAN data out today - the real insight into what people are actually buying in bookstores around the country.
I can’t quite believe I get to say that out loud. It’s wild - and it means so much to me. So much of what I do is about dragging retirement - and the years before it that were made to look like it - out of the back of the bookshop. You know the spot… bottom shelf, under "Finance or Self-Help or Something" - that you have to go looking for!
But when a book like this hits in week one, it validats what we all need and the needle moves for us. We feel validated - finally! And, then Bookstores pay attention. It gets shelved up the front, where people actually see it. And once people see it, they start talking. They get curious. They share. And you’ve made that happen and I am so grateful and excited you have.
And that’s the whole point: the more we talk about Prime Time and about how to use our super, our time, our choices - the better we get at this part of life. We start building lives even better than the generations before us could.
That’s always been my goal: to help people in the second half of life live happy, healthy, long and financially secure lives. This book reaching the charts? That’s one big, beautiful step in that direction. And hopefully this is the beginning of making Prime Times count more, for all of us.
If you’ve already grabbed a copy - thank you. I’m so grateful. And if you haven’t yet… well, maybe this is your sign. 😉 You can order it online here, or grab it from your local bookstore, Big W, Target or Kmart (though lots have sold out and are mid-restock!).
And if you’ve got 30 seconds spare, I’d love a review - on Amazon, if that’s where you bought it, or Goodreads if you picked it up elsewhere. It makes a big difference.
Now, back to your regular programming… 💛
Getting AHEAD of Perimenopause
Perimenopause can creep in quietly, with brain fog, anxiety, insomnia or sudden mood swings, or it can hit like a freight train. If you’re in your 40s or 50s and starting to feel “off,” there’s a good chance your hormones are behind it, and it’s not just about hot flushes or missed periods.
This week on Prime Time, I’m joined by journalist, TV presenter and all-round powerhouse Shelly Horton, a familiar face on Aussie screens and now the author of I'm Your Peri Godmother: A happily-ever-after guide to kicking perimenopause in the ovaries, the first Aussie guide to perimenopause that’s raw, evidence-based and unashamedly funny.
Shelly shares how she went from media high-flyer to hormonal hot mess in the ICU, and how she clawed her way back with good doctors, better information, and plenty of honesty. We unpack what perimenopause actually is, how to manage and prevent the tougher symptoms, and why this conversation matters just as much for the men who live, work and love alongside women going through it.
LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE OF THE PODCAST HERE:
Highlights of the conversation:
What perimenopause actually is, how long it can last, and why it often goes unrecognised for years.
Why menopause gets all the attention, even though perimenopause is where most of the symptoms show up.
The early signs to look out for — including anxiety, insomnia, mood changes, and heart palpitations.
Why blood tests can be unreliable, and how a good GP will diagnose based on symptoms and timing.
The real story behind HRT and breast cancer risk and why the science has changed since the early 2000s.
How vaginal oestrogen can support sleep, intimacy, and prevent UTIs — even in later life.
The growing role of strength training in midlife health, and how to start safely.
Small but powerful lifestyle shifts, from “zero days” to sleep routines and morning walks.
Why it’s important to talk openly with doctors, partners, and friends about what’s really going on.
The value of curiosity, good information, and knowing you're not the only one going through it.
You can check out Shelly's book, 'I'm Your Peri Godmother: A happily-ever-after guide to kicking perimenopause in the ovaries' in all good bookstores, online, or on Audible.
