Your guide to Australia's most beautiful walks with Brett Godfrey
Australia is home to some of the world’s most breathtaking walking trails and multi-day hikes. It’s high time we started exploring our own backyard and embracing the great outdoors right here at home. In this episode, I chat with Brett Godfrey, co-owner of the Tasmanian Walking Company, about the incredible walks on offer in Tassie and beyond, and how you can make walking trips one of your own Prime Time challenges.

Highlights of the conversation:
How and why Brett Godfrey ended up an owner of the Tasmanian Walking Company.
The beauty of Tasmania for walking — Over the past few decades, the Tasmanian government has heavily invested in its parks, transforming the state's ecotourism landscape. These efforts have made Tasmania a leading destination for walkers, offering a truly unique experience.
Home grown —While Australia boasts some incredible walks, we often overlook the beauty and diversity in our own backyard. There's still untapped potential to enhance these experiences and showcase them on a global level.
The changing market for travel experiences in Australia — challenge by day, reward by night - Multi-night walks are gaining popularity, especially among those in their 50s and 60s, as travellers seek more fulfilling experiences on holiday. In midlife, we want more than just relaxation — we crave adventure, challenge, and a sense of accomplishment.
The Three Capes Walk is a stunning three-night, four-day adventure departing from Hobart, where you'll explore two of Tasmania's iconic capes and look over spectacular views of the third. The lodges are discreetly tucked away in the wilderness, blending into nature and providing everything you need. The only way to reach this walk and the beautiful lodges that accomodate you is by walking in—They fly provisions in by helicopter every 6-8 weeks, and guides carry in the fresh produce for each tour.
Each walk has two experienced guides leading your group—one at the front, one at the back—ensuring no one is left behind or rushed. The guides themselves are an integral part of the experience—knowledgeable, supportive, and full of insights that make a real difference on the journey.
Stepping up to Cradle Mountain — Another standout walk is Cradle Mountain, a more challenging trek that takes things up a notch. You'll walk for around 4–5 hours each day. The landscape is beautifully diverse, with rainforests, valleys, and the highest peak in Tasmania. You might even experience snow in November! But no matter the weather, you're prepared and rewarded with warm beds and restaurant-quality meals at the end of the day.
The Prime Time challenge — these walks push us, keeping us moving and inspired. In our Prime Time, many seem to want to embrace more walking holidays. They offer a rewarding challenge and an opportunity to stay active.
If you're new to walking, there are Long Weekender walks — perfect for beginners. These 2-night, 3-day adventures offer a taste of multi-night walking, giving you the chance to see if you're ready for something more.
For those ready to take the next step, there are the Signature Walks — three nights and four full days of immersive walking experiences. Some standout options include the 12 Apostles Lodge Walk, Kangaroo Island Lodge Walk, and the Bay of Fires Walk, which Lonely Planet named the "hottest spot to visit" when it launched in 2005. There are another 6 or 7 similar walks, as this is a growing trend.
To wrap up the show, Brett shares his favourite walk, so make sure to listen all the way to the end!

From Bec’s Desk
A few weeks ago I was hosted on the Three Capes Walk in Tasmania. What a fun challenge for me, and frankly, something I think you should all feel inspired to do if you health is in good stead. It was the first of what I hope will become more regular ‘Prime Time Challenges’ in this next stage of life, allowing myself some special holidays — tackling the types of activities that you have to work towards, and that feel like a real achievement at the end. I trained for six weeks for the trip - not very intensely, and found it well within my fitness ability. And now I’m ready for more. And chatting with Brett Godfrey since has me even more inspired about walking the world.
In other things, today marks the kickoff for the next How to Have an Epic Retirement Flagship Course - the last program for 2024. You can still book your place if you’re keen, knowing the first live event isn’t until Monday evening next week. Use the coupon code PRIMESUMMER24 for 15% off. Book your spot here.
In case you missed it, I did an article in The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald after making last week’s podcast - about knowing when you’re ready to retire. It’s here… “How do you know when you’re ready to retire?”.
And, my next book, Prime Time is almost done. It’s starting to feel almost finished - and there’s still ten days til deadline! Phew!
I hope you enjoy my chat with Brett Godfrey.
Catch you next week, and in the meantime, make your Prime Time count!
Many thanks! Bec Wilson
