The Epic Retirement Tick: What’s changed and how to review your super fund for retirement
As part of Epic Retirement Month, there are two Prime Time episodes this week.
This week, as part of Epic Retirement Month, we’ve dropped not one but two shows for you.
First up, we’re taking a fresh look at the Epic Retirement Tick ten weeks on and talking about how the industry reacted, what shifted and how you should evaluate your fund now that the dust has settled.
The second episode is a conversation with my publisher about the brand-new edition of How to Have an Epic Retirement, which hits stores this week. We dive into the updates, why they matter, and what’s new for readers.
As part of Epic Retirement Month, I’ve invited Ian Fryer from Chant West back to the show to unpack how the industry reacted when we launched the tick; and then we walk through how to evaluate your super fund as you head toward retirement — using the same behind-the-scenes criteria that helped us build the Epic Retirement Tick in the first place.
If you’re wondering whether your fund is really set up to support your retirement, this episode is for you. We talk about investment performance, retirement tools, advice access, drawdown options, and what actually matters when your super fund becomes your income fund.
You’ll also hear a few small but important updates to the Tick — and I’ve unlocked a bonus lesson from the new Epic Retirement Course to walk you through assessing your fund, step by step. Head over to the website and have a look.

Highlights of the conversation:
What’s changed since the Epic Retirement Tick launch: We talk about where the funds are now, how they reacted when the first tick information got out there, and what everybody should know about where they are ten weeks later.
Why only a few funds earned the Tick this year: Ian explains why most super funds haven’t made real progress in their retirement offerings — and what they’re waiting for.
How to judge if your fund is actually retirement-ready: We walk through the key criteria, from income strategy and product structure to member communication and digital tools.
Understanding income payments and flexibility: Why it matters how your fund helps you draw income in retirement and what to look out for.
Are you getting the guidance you need? Many funds fall short on retirement support. Ian explains why financial advice and education should be core services, not extras.
The power of small changes: Even if your fund doesn’t have all the bells and whistles yet, Ian shares what good progress looks like and how to spot a fund that’s genuinely heading in the right direction.
Why retirement support should go beyond “tick the box”: We unpack what it means for funds to genuinely help people spend their super — not just manage it
Revealing the updated ‘How to Have an Epic Retirement’ book!
In this bonus episode on Prime Time, I’m joined by someone very special — my publisher, Sophie Hamley from Hachette — to celebrate the release of the brand new Australia and New Zealand edition of How to Have an Epic Retirement.
The release of the book is one of the important things we organised for Epic Retirement Month, knowing having an updated guidebook to retirement really is important.
Sophie and I talk about what’s changed since the book first came out, what’s stayed the same (those six pillars!), and the big lessons I’ve learned after three years of talking to thousands of people about retirement. We also chat about what’s new in the 2025 edition — from the “sweet spot” between super and the age pension, to safer ways to spend, smarter advice options, and some much-needed content for solo retirees and renters.
It reflects the latest systems, strategies and real-world insights for today’s retirees and pre-retirees, making it the most up-to-date roadmap for building an epic life after work.
If you’ve read the first edition, I think you’ll love the update. And if you haven’t read it yet… now’s the perfect time. Get your copy here.
