The life lessons from Australia’s most trusted GP: Dr.Kerryn Phelps AM
A really interesting conversation about how health and health advice has changed, and what’s really important today.
This week I chat with Dr Kerryn Phelps AM, one of Australia's most well-known GP's and health communicators. She's spent her life educating people about health, but she's so much more than a doctor.
Today we’re talking about how we can maintain and optimise our wellbeing in our midlife and retirement. Dr Phelps just released her new book, The Power of Balance this month. And it leads us into a really interesting conversation about how health and health advice has changed, and what’s really important today, as well as a more personal conversation about her own career in health and what she’s learned along the way.
Here’s some highlights:
How health recommendations for people in the second half of life have changed over our lifetime - looking back on the 80s versus today, and how far we’ve come.
The role the GPs play today - in supporting personal health and wellbeing and helping you manage your risks.
How we take better responsibility for our health: the way we live our lives and the things that are really fundamentally important
Medical checkups and your relationship with your GP and how that should work.
Integrative medicine at the forefront - Complementary or natural therapies and how they can be implemented into your healthcare, including natural therapies from different cultural areas.
Are vitamins off the shelf really safe? We talk about the health risks of natural medicines and how they interact with other medicines.
Misinformation and vitamin marketing, and how to identify whether a company or influencer’s insights into vitamins and supplements are reliable and based on real qualifications and experience.
Things we should all know about our microbiome and gut health, and the role of the gut in our whole body health.
The link between the gut and the brain and good cognitive health and the proactive, good-sense steps we can take to manage our gut health better.
The ideal amount of exercise we should do each day. The types and mix of exercise we should be doing. How we build our exercise tolerance. And how we motivate ourselves to exercise.
The role of sleep quality and our brain, and the impact it has on our emotional and physical health, and how to go back to basics. The really practical things we can do to improve our sleep that we forget - sleep hygiene tips we can all use.
Alcohol, advice from the doctor about what impact alcohol can have on our body and what the safest dose of alcohol is. And her advice isn’t all bad news for those who like a glass of wine.
What she does to practise what she preaches in looking after her health.
Dr Phelps talks about her own personal transitions in life and how she has changed and adapted.
